Topics for your Bachelor's or Master's Thesis
The following subject areas are intended as a guide. We have a very broad technological base and can offer interesting tasks in almost all technical fields of study. Also there are many other topics to choose. Together we will find a suitable topic for you.
Measurement technology/sensor technology
We are constantly striving to improve the measurement technology we use, to find new applications or to explore completely new processes. To do this, we have to deal intensively with the physics behind every measurement technology, both theoretically and experimentally. All non-destructive material testing methods, such as ultrasound or electromagnetic methods, are of interest to us.
Electronic systems
The environment of a pipeline inspection is comparable to that in space travel. The systems must be completely autonomous, very robust, energy-efficient and have their own power supply. In addition, the installation space is very limited. There is a lot of potential for optimization or even completely new technical approaches to be investigated.
Mechanical design
Like the probe in space travel, the inspection device for the pipeline must be specially designed to provide the best conditions for measuring high-precision data in this demanding environment. This requires innovative approaches in a broad environment.
Signal processing, algorithms, machine learning
When inspecting a pipeline, an image of the pipeline wall is taken with millimeter precision, usually using various measurement techniques. For pipelines of several 100 km in length, anomalies with an extension down to the mm range are searched for in an area of several 100,000 m2. In order to reliably detect, classify and measure this needle in a haystack, state-of-the-art methods are required and need to be further developed. Both classic algorithms and machine learning methods are used here and must be constantly developed further.
Software development and architecture
Although the aim is to automate a large part of the data evaluation, these algorithms must be implemented with high performance. In addition, there is always a part of the data that needs to be evaluated manually by highly specialized data analysts. These tasks require tailor-made software tools for visualization, processing and reporting.
